Organic, Vegan, Cruelty-Free & Sulphate-Free Shampoos
If you are considering switching to a natural hair care routine, the first thing you should consider is your shampoo. Most conventional shampoos contain harsh chemicals such as SLS that can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause irritation.
Fortunately, there are many SLS-free alternatives available that are gentle on your hair and the environment. In addition, to being from vegan and cruelty-free haircare brands. So, it’s a win-win for your hair and nature.
In this blog post, I’ve curated a list of the top SLS-free shampoos I’ve used that will leave your hair feeling revitalised, nourished, and free from harsh chemicals. By embracing natural options, you can bid farewell to chemical-laden products and enjoy the benefits of a more wholesome approach to hair care.
But first, let's learn more about sulphates.
What is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) in Shampoos and is it safe to use?
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, commonly known as SLS, is a prevalent surfactant used in most traditional shampoos. It produces a lathering effect, providing a sense of cleanliness to the user. However, its inclusion has become a point of concern in the hair care industry due to its potential adverse effects.
SLS can strip natural oils from your hair and scalp, resulting in dehydration, brittleness, and a lacklustre appearance. Additionally, it may cause irritation, itchiness, and redness, especially in those with sensitive skin or existing scalp conditions. Prolonged exposure to SLS has also been linked to more severe problems such as hair loss.
While experts differ in their opinions regarding SLS's safety in shampoos, it is generally deemed safe in small quantities. However, certain individuals may experience heightened sensitivity to its impact. Thankfully, SLS-free shampoos offer a gentler, more natural hair care experience. They use alternative surfactants such as coconut oil-derived ingredients or plant-based extracts to cleanse hair without stripping it of its natural oils.
Transitioning to SLS-free shampoos ensures a safer, more enriching hair care regimen. Luckily, numerous SLS-free shampoos are available on the market. Identifying them is key to finding the right product to meet your hair and scalp needs with confidence.
How to Identify SLS-Free Shampoos
Understanding how to read ingredient lists is crucial when selecting a shampoo without SLS. The following tips can assist in identifying SLS-free options:
Firstly, carefully scrutinise the label and look for shampoos that explicitly state "SLS-free" or "sulphate-free". This guarantees that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is not present in the product.
Secondly, if the shampoo does not explicitly mention being SLS-free, check the ingredient list for alternative surfactants, like Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), or Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate (SLMI), which provide gentle cleansing while retaining natural oils in your hair. Most often, the sulphate is the second or third ingredient after aqua.
Thirdly, other sulphates, such as Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS), should be avoided. Check the ingredient list to ensure that the shampoo is free of sulphates that may not be kind to your hair or scalp.
Finally, conduct thorough research on the brand to assess their product formulations and reputation. Consider opting for brands that are known for their dedication to natural ingredients and transparency about their product formulations, like all the brands I’ve tried and tested below.
By following these guidelines, you can choose a gentle, SLS-free shampoo that is suitable for your hair and scalp.
The Hair & Scalp Benefits Of SLS-Free Shampoos
SLS-free shampoos offer a milder alternative for your hair and scalp and come with numerous benefits.
- Gentler on the Scalp: Shampoos without SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) tend to be milder, reducing the risk of scalp irritation, dryness, and itching, especially for those with sensitive skin.
- Preserves Natural Oils: SLS-free shampoos help maintain the scalp's natural oils, preventing excessive dryness and promoting healthier hair.
- Reduced Irritation: By avoiding SLS, these shampoos lower the likelihood of allergic reactions or skin irritation, making them a better choice for many individuals.
- Colour Protection: SLS-free formulas can help retain hair colour for longer periods, particularly beneficial for dyed or treated hair.
- Environmentally Friendly: Some SLS-free shampoos utilise eco-friendlier ingredients, making them a more environmentally conscious choice.
- Less Frizz and Damage: With their gentler composition, SLS-free shampoos can reduce frizz and potential damage to hair strands, resulting in more manageable hair.
Best Natural Sulfate-Free Shampoos
So, what made me switch to kinder haircare?
As you'll discover in my hair loss guide, I have experienced excessive hair loss over the last few years. For this reason, I delved into extensive research and discovered that a natural haircare routine consisting of SLS-free shampoos would be beneficial. In addition, to minimise the damage caused by harsh metals and chemicals in hard water, I also started using soft water by switching to a hard water showerhead filter. As a result, of these changes to minimise unwanted chemicals on my hair and scalp the condition of my hair is gradually improving.
The following list includes all the SLS-free shampoos that I've used in recent years and that have significantly improved my hair's condition. As for my shampoo rotation, throughout the week I alternate between blonde-enhancing shampoos and a hair-strengthening shampoo infused with nourishing ingredients to stimulate hair growth.
These brands not only provide a gentler treatment for both hair and scalp, but they are also vegan and cruelty-free.

Sukin is an Australian brand that is widely recognised for its commitment to using natural, cruelty-free ingredients, making it a popular selection among those who prioritise ethical beauty products. Instead of using harsh sulphates, Sukin uses Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate which sounds like a scary ingredient however it’s considered a safe substitute that shouldn’t cause irritation.
My product of choice, the Sukin Natural Balance Shampoo's formula consists of gentle, plant-based cleansers that thoroughly remove dirt and impurities without stripping the hair of its natural oils. This ensures that the hair feels clean, refreshed, and nourished. Additionally, the shampoo includes a unique blend of botanical extracts such as aloe vera, nettle, and horsetail that collaborate to calm and condition the scalp, encouraging healthier hair growth.
Apart from the natural components, Sukin Natural Balance Shampoo includes wheat protein that helps to fortify and reinforce the hair shaft, preventing breakage and promoting stronger, more resilient hair. Klorane is considered one of the best French beauty brands and is therefore a top choice for those seeking a natural hair care routine since the brand has been utilising botanical ingredients and sustainable practices since 1965.
The standout feature of their shampoo is its gentle yet effective formula, which is free of SLS and other harsh chemicals. It effectively cleanses the hair and scalp without stripping natural oils, making it ideal for those concerned about dryness or irritation. As a safer alternative, Klorane uses a sulphate called Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate which is considered to be non-irritating.
In addition, shampoos from Klorane contain botanical extracts that nourish and hydrate hair, making them particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with dryness, frizz, or damage. Klorane offers a range of formulations, including Quinine Strengthening Shampoo and Mango Butter Nourishing Shampoo, to address different hair concerns.
However, when it comes to maintaining my blonde hair at home, I opt for the Klorane Blond Highlights Shampoo with Chamomile. Not only does it boast a lovely scent, but it also treats my hair with care - a quality that's not surprising considering its suitability for children's hair as well.
Countless Klorane shampoo users have reported noticeable improvements in hair health and appearance. With regular use, hair becomes softer, smoother, and more manageable. Dr. Bronner also offers safe formulations suitable for babies, with a variety of essential oils such as rose, citrus, peppermint, and tea tree. Tips on Switching to SLS-Free Haircare
Transitioning to an SLS-free haircare routine is easy when implementing a few useful tips and tricks that can make the transition hassle-free and smooth. Below are some tips that will assist you in successfully shifting to SLS-free shampoos, enabling you to enjoy the advantages of natural, healthy hair:
- Clarify your Hair:
Before transitioning to an SLS-free shampoo, use a clarifying shampoo to eliminate any buildup from previous products or use a one-off hair treatment such as the Malibu Crystal C gel to remove buildup and hard water. This will ensure that your hair and scalp adjust effortlessly to the new shampoo and reap its benefits quickly.
- Choose the Appropriate Shampoo:
Like conventional shampoos, SLS-free shampoos are formulated for different hair types. Choose a shampoo that is specifically designed to address your hair concerns, whether you have oily, dry, or damaged hair. As you’ll see below, I always opt for as well as blonde enhancement.
- Use a Conditioner:
Although SLS-free shampoos are typically milder than conventional ones, they will still require the use of a conditioner. Select a conditioner that is free from harsh chemicals to complete your SLS-free haircare routine. For instance, I use deep conditioners and bonding treatments to enhance the results of the shampoo.
- Be Patient:
Your hair may take some time to adapt to the new routine. During the transition period, you may notice changes in the texture and feel of your hair. However, be patient and allow your hair the time it needs to adjust to the SLS-free products. Like skincare, hair can take between 1 to 3 months before noticing any significant improvement.
By following these tips, you can seamlessly transition to SLS-free haircare and enjoy the benefits of nourished, healthy hair and say goodbye to harsh chemicals.
To conclude
Opting for SLS-free shampoos is an effective way to enhance the overall health of your hair and scalp. When you eliminate harsh chemicals like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate from your hair care routine, you can enjoy a mane that is not only softer and smoother but also much more manageable.
Moreover, by choosing gentle formulas, you can alleviate dryness, itching, and other scalp conditions, providing your hair with the nourishment it requires. By incorporating natural ingredients into your hair care regimen, you can avoid the use of harmful chemicals and unlock the full potential of healthy hair.
Despite my positive experiences using these products over the past three years, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and carefully examine the ingredients of any cosmetic item before using it. This is especially important given that product formulations can be subject to change, and alternative SLS options may not produce the same beneficial effects for all individuals.
